It took a lot of energy to just survive out there, but folks still sought out entertainment to fill their free time. These frontier activities often consisted of races, fights, drinking, sex and gambling, which proves that human nature hasn’t shifted that much in the last 250 years, we’re just lazier. Of the many gambling games, one of the more popular was definitely poker. We’ve all seen the western movies, and if they’re accurate by even a fraction, a poker game could be found in the smallest of settlements.
The dealer in a poker game rotates from player to player and is often represented with a kind of button. Therefore, the dealer is considered ‘On the Button’. This marker is also called a ‘Buck’, because on the frontier they didn’t use a button for this job but a deer horn knife called a buck knife.
Passing the buck knife, or ‘Passing the Buck’, meant that the responsibility of the next deal, and keeping the game going, was now in the hands of another player.
